Lord Grantham: Robert Grantham is the Earl of Downton and Viscount Downton. He is married to Cora Crawley, and has three daughters; Mary, Edith, and Sybil. He is the son of Violet Crawley and the previous Earl of Grantham. He married Cora Levinson is 1890 in order to save the estate with her money, but ended up falling in love with her eventually.
Lady Grantham: Cora Crawley is an American heiress who married into a British noble family. She has three daughters, and was pregnant 18 years after Sybil's birth, but had a miscarriage. she has two grandchildren; Mary and Mathew's son George, and Sybil and Tom's daughter, Sybil. Mary Crawley: Mary Josephine Crawley is the eldest daughter of Lord and lady Grantham. She was married to Mathew Crawley, but he passed away in a tragic accident. She has one son, George, who is two years old. After Mathew's death, she took interest in the estate, and constantly trying to improve and save Downton abbey. Edith Crawley: Edith Crawley is the second daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham. She always feels as if she is the "unwanted" one, overshadowed by her two sisters, Mary and Sybil. Edith later on begins a relationship with Sir Anthony Strallan, and is eventually engaged to him. However, they end up breaking off the engagement. During the fourth series, she becomes romantically involved with Michael Gregson. However, while he is in Germany, he goes missing, and Edith delivers his child without anyone except for her aunt knowing. Sybil Crawley: Sybil Cora Branson( nee Crawley) is the youngest daughter of Lord and Lady Grantham. She develops strong feelings for the family's chauffeur, Tom Branson, and eventually ends up marrying him, much to the disappointment of her family. By the end of the second season, Sybil and Tom leave for Dublin. In 1919, Sybil writes to her mother to say that she is pregnant. Sybil has the baby at Downton Abbey, but due to complications, Sybil passes away surrounded by her family, at the age of 24. Mathew Crawley: Mathew Reginald Crawley is the only son of Isobel Crawley, a trained nurse, and the late Dr. Reginald Crawley. After the heirs of Downton Abbey perish aboard the Titanic, Lord Grantham decides that Mathew is the next closest relative, and now the heir to Downton Abbey. Eventually, after a lot of quarrels and dislike, Mathew and Mary fall in love. However, Mathew goes to war, and is engaged to Miss Lavinia Swire, whilst Mary is engaged to Sir Richard Carlisle. Eventually, Mathew and Mary end up engaged and married, and have one son, George. Right after the birth of George however, Mathew is in a car crash and dies on the spot. Violet Crawley: Violet Crawley, known as granny or mama, is the Dowager Countess of Grantham. She is the mother of Robert and Lady Rosamund Painswick. She is a woman of quick wit, loves her son and is proud of her granddaughters. Tom Branson: He was the former chauffeur for the Crawley family, but ended up marrying Sybil. The two of them moved back to his native Ireland, and returned to England when Sybil was pregnant. After Sybil passed away, Tom stayed at Downton with his daughter who was also named Sybil, and became the estate manager. Mrs. Hughes: Mrs. Hughes began as the head Housemaid, an was soon promoted to head Housekeeper. She is a woman who is basically running Downton, along with Mr. Carson. The two of them manage all of the servants downstairs. Mr. Carson: Mr. Carson has a close relationship with Violet Crawley, and respects the Crawley family very, very much. He loves Lady Mary as if she is his own daughter. Along with Mrs. Hughes, he runs all of the parties and gatherings the Crawley family may have. He is the head Butler. Mr. Bates: Mr. Bates is the valet for Lord Grantham, and had previously served in the war alongside him. When he was first employed at Downton, the staff did not take kindly to him because he had to walk with a cane, so he was had limited movement. Only the housemaid, Anna, was his friend at that time. Eventually, everyone excepted him, and he is now a valuable member of the Crawley household. However, Mr. Bates does have a bad temper, and that has got him in trouble quite a few times. Anna Bates: Anna Bates was head Housemaid at Downton, and is currently Lady Mary's lady's maid. Anna has a very good relationship with the Crawley family, especially the three sisters, Mary, Edith, and Sybil. Anna has earned the trust of trust of the Crawley family by keeping a very big secret for Mary. Anna is an easygoing person, and is always ready to help others. Mrs. Patmore: Beryl Patmore is the cook at Downton Abbey, and likes to think that she runs Downton. Mrs. Patmore is strict, especially towards Daisy, who is the assistant cook, but is still very nice. She has a kind heart, and is always ready to offer advice to those who need it. Daisy Mason: Daisy Mason, previously known as Daisy Robinson is the assistant cook and widow of William Mason. Daisy started off as very unimportant character, but soon moved up to be respected on a small level by others. Daisy was never truly in love with William, but married him because he was going to die from the injuries he suffered in World War 1. He wanted her to have the benefits of a widow's wife, and so she could become closer to Mr. Mason, Williams father. |
